Definitions
Common terms and concepts used throughout the TetherX platform. Understanding these definitions helps you navigate the system and communicate effectively with support.
TetherX Platform
The complete cloud-connected security management system, accessible via web browser or native iOS and Android apps. The TetherX Platform provides remote access to all your sites, cameras, footage, and integrated systems.
Tip: Access the platform at https://app.timeline.is from any device with Internet connectivity. Your data stays synchronised across web, iOS, and Android.
TetherX Account
Your account on the TetherX Platform. One account can manage multiple sites, making it easy to oversee multiple locations from a single login.
Tip: Use the same account credentials across all devices - web browser, iOS app, and Android app. Changes made on one device appear immediately on all others.
Site
A physical location with its own Cameras, TetherBoxes, and security equipment. Each site operates independently but can be managed from your TetherX Account.
Examples:
- Retail chain: Each shop is a separate site
- Multi-site business: Head office, warehouse, branch offices are separate sites
- Integrator: Each customer location is a separate site
Tip: Sites provide logical separation - different Users can access different sites, and each site has its own TetherBoxes, Cameras, and settings.
Timeline
A timeline represents a legal entity or organisation. It serves as the top-level container for all Sites, Cameras, TetherBoxes, and other resources associated with that entity.
Examples:
- Single-entity organisation: One timeline containing all sites (most common)
- Multi-entity organisation: Separate timelines by region, subsidiary, or business unit (e.g., Americas timeline, APAC timeline)
Tip: Most organisations use a single timeline. Multiple timelines are typically created for large enterprises that need separate billing, reporting, or permission structures for different business units. See User Permissions to grant users access to specific timelines.
TetherBox
TetherBox is the software that runs on your edge device, and "TetherBox" is also used as shorthand for the physical device itself.
What TetherBox does:
- Video recording: Records and stores footage from IP Cameras locally
- Edge processing: Runs analytics and AI processing on-site
- IoT hub: Connects and manages Internet of Things Devices
- Secure connectivity: Provides VPN tunnelling and remote access
- Cloud sync: Uploads footage and Events to TetherX Platform
Tip: TetherBox continues recording even when Internet is unavailable. Once connectivity returns, footage automatically synchronises to the cloud.
User Types
Guest
Temporary access to specific content, such as someone who was sent a link to view an event. No login required.
Tip: Use guest links to share specific Events with police, insurance assessors, or investigators without creating full user accounts.
User
Standard user with limited access - typically the local receptionist, security guard, or police officer granted temporary access. Usually restricted to viewing specific Cameras with no administrative rights.
Users may be granted specific permissions such as:
- Audio challenges
- Disarming alarms
- Viewing specific Cameras only
See User Permissions for detailed instructions on configuring what each user can access and do.
Warning: Standard Users cannot modify system configuration or view billing information. Grant only the minimum permissions required for their role.
Integrator
A specialist user type for security professionals who install and maintain TetherX systems. Integrators have access to:
- Partner portal with pricing and product information
- Quote tool for customer proposals
- Administrative functions (unless disabled by Admin)
- Multiple customer sites from one account
Tip: Integrators can be granted access to new customer sites automatically, making ongoing support more efficient. Admins can revoke integrator access at any time.
Admin
A trusted user with full administrative rights to the site, including:
- Users management
- System configuration
- All Cameras and Devices
- Billing and subscriptions
- Integration settings
Warning: Admin access grants full control over the site, including the ability to delete footage, remove Users, and modify billing. Only grant admin access to fully trusted individuals.
